Tenuta Di Biserno

Upon realizing the potential of an as-yet-undiscovered terroir, Marchese Lodovico Antinori dreamed of developing a new company, one last project that would bring together the best of his past experiences and his present inspirations. Tenuta di Biserno is the culmination of that dream, a passion for creating a truly special wine that he shares with his long time friend and wine advisor, Michel Rolland.

Already acclaimed the world over for founding and building the reputations of Ornellaia and Masseto, two of Italy’s most celebrated wines, Lodovico wondered if he could reach the same heights once more with his new estate located a little further north in the Alta Maremma.

He sought the partnership of his brother, Marchese Piero Antinori, the President of the world-renowned Antinori Wines. Piero was delighted to be involved, to work together with Lodovico for the first time on a wine project. Only a few years from its foundation, the brothers’ new project has already captured the imagination and plaudits of the wine world, and, thus, another milestone in both of their illustrious careers has been achieved. Time will see Lodovico’s vision grow into full maturity, bringing further laurels to the outstanding wine making legacies of both Piero and Lodovico.

The Alta Maremma

Set in Southern Tuscany’s Alta Maremma, Tenuta di Biserno lies among the hills of Bibbona, a charming wine village bordering the famous one of Bolgheri. The panorama is breathtaking, with views down to the Tyrrhenian Sea all the way to Corsica and the Island of Elba.

“The vineyards of Bibbona and Bolgheri meet each other,” Lodovico explains, “reminding me of Saint Emilion and Pomerol."

Lodovico learned about this parcel of land from Dante Scanavino, his then-General Manager at Ornellaia. A survey of the land revealed striking similarities between this terroir and that of Masseto – Lodovico’s expectations, given the proximity of the property to Bolgheri, were confirmed.  But beyond that, what Lodovico recognized here were other elements in the soil that immediately inspired him to plant predominantly Cabernet Franc. His intuition would prove correct, for this varietal is thriving in the terroir of Tenuta di Biserno.

The Winery

Tenuta di Biserno is a 90-hectare estate situated in Bibbona and bordering the world cultural heritage village of Bolgheri.  Lodovico immediately observed a striking resemblance to the soils of Masseto with silt, alluvial sand and that all-important clay – rather atypical in Bolgheri. Soil composition not withstanding, Lodovico had a strong gut feeling that Cabernet Franc would be at its best here. Betting on his perceptive insight, he planted exclusively Bordeaux varietals, significantly increasing the proportions of Cabernet Franc, followed by Merlot, some Cabernet Sauvignon and surprisingly high proportions of Petit Verdot.  High-density maritime sediments and clay on well-sheltered north-west slopes provide ideal growing conditions for Merlot, while free-draining gravelly sites, higher up, are perfect for the Cabernets.  An important aspect of terroir that is often overlooked is luminosity. Tenuta di Biserno enjoys excellent light and benefits both from perfect sun exposure and cooling sea breezes.

The Wines

2008 Lodovico

LodovicoLodovico is a rare, unexpected assemblage from the Biserno estate. They had previously identified parcels of the estate that were particularly conducive to the cultivation of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, but only recently discovered within that micro-climate and terroir an even more special parcel, Vigna Lodovico, that has been yielding superior, singular results. It then became immediately clear to everyone involved that this unique character must be fostered, that this individual expression demanded to be crafted. Lodovico, an extraordinary wine, is only available in extremely small quantities through exclusive wine merchants.

A youthful and fairly tight wine now but opens up in the glass showing a multitude of layers. Fruity, floral and spicy notes on the nose; forest fruit, blackcurrant, Mediterranean herbs. A refined palate with fine tannins, sweet fruit and terrific length. A balanced wine of elegance and refinement with power and longevity, Lodovico is further confirmation of what the terroir of Tenuta di Biserno can produce.

The 2008 Lodovico is a blend of mostly Cabernet Franc with Merlot and some Petit
Verdot. Layers of espresso, mocha, blackberry jam and spices take shape in the
glass. The 2008 shows remarkable depth and polish all the way trough to the finish.
The Lodovico is another big, persistent wine endowed with tons of Maremma
warmth and personality. These vines are just 6-7 years old. The potential for the
future seems very, very bright. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028. Antonio Galloni,
Closing Date: 6-30-12.

This is racy and super fine with a blueberry and mineral character with hints of
sage. Full and racy with an intense center palate of fruit and ultra-fine tannins. Fab.
Cabernet Franc. Better in 2014. James Suckling, August 2012

Wine Spectator, 94 points
Though rich, this red is elegant and harmonious, featuring flavors of black currant,
cherry, cedar, graphite and spice. A supple and polished wine, with a beam of fruit
persisting through the finish. Best from 2014 through 2024. 32 cases imported. –

2008 Biserno

BisernoBiserno, the eponymous wine, is the perfect ambassador for the estate, offering the very
essence of this unique terroir – the unique combination of soil, luminosity and maritime position. A sense of place is the hallmark of any great wine, and Biserno, set within a classical frame, is firmly grounded in this special area of the Alta Maremma.  Opaque and inky, plum-ruby in color, with a firm to very fine bright rim, Biserno immediately asserts a sense of power. The nose, so youthful, is relatively subdued, just hinting at dark, earthy, brooding fruit, china ink, sultry spice, dark chocolate and crushed stone minerals.

The palate mirrors the aromatics presented on the nose, adding a savory, meaty richness and an authoritative muscularity. Profound, layered complexity is evident and will develop dramatically given some time in bottle. Densely fruited, it maintains hallmark freshness and poise through to a protracted, generous finish, giving some insight into the wine’s future development.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, 96 points

The 2008 Biserno is a drop-dead gorgeous. A blend of mostly Cabernet Franc,
with dollops of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, the 2008 Biserno
is rich, seamless and opulent, yet also beautifully balanced at the same time. A
warm, open bouquet redolent of mocha, espresso, wild herbs and smoke leads
to plush fruit as this harmonious, totally symmetrical wine opens up. This is a
great showing. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028 – Antonio Galloni, Closing
Date: 6-30-12

James Suckling, 94 points

“This is very sexy with decadent meat, berries and spices. Cooked rhubarb.
Hints of cocoa. Full body, with a racy and intense mid-palate. Racy and
balanced. Long, long finish. Just coming around now.” James Suckling - August
2012

2008 Il Pino

Il Pino

A careful assemblage of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, Il Pino di Biserno is the embodiment of Tenuta di Biserno’s unique terroir and a classic wine of the Alta Maremma.

Deep and brilliant plum-ruby in color, this wine
has an initially subdued nose with macerated
cherries gradually coming to the fore. Dark fruit
extends onto a powerful, mineral-rich palate with
ripe well-integrated tannins and hints of spice. A
lovely balance and very fine length.

They are very proud that with Il Pino di Biserno
they have managed to keep the distinctive
characteristics of balance and finesse – a rare
achievement, indeed, for a second wine.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, 93 points

The 2008 Il Pino di Biserno is a rich wine endowed with considerable depth.
Plums, blackberries, exotic spices, mocha and licorice are woven together in this
imposing, structured wine. The pedigree of the 2008 vintage comes trough in
spades. The 2008 has come along beautifully since I tasted it last year. Il Pino di
Biserno is 40% Cabernet Franc, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5%
Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2028. Antonio Galloni, Closing Date: 6-
30-12

James Suckling, 92 points

Really beautiful aromas of dried fruits, blackberries and flowers follow through
to a full body, with racy tannins and a refined finish. A little more austere than
the 2007. James Suckling, August 2012
