Shafer Tasting Notes
Shafer'ssingle-vineyard Carneros-grown Chardonnay is produced from small-clustered clones of grapes selected for their low yields and distinctive flavors. Fermentation takes place within individual oak and stainless steel barrels using native yeasts. The wine matures on the lees for 14 months and since it undergoes no malolactic fermentation this Chardonnay retains a lively natural acidity. The vineyard is named for its Red-shouldered Hawks and other birds of prey, who play an important role in Shafer's natural farming practices.

Clean, crisp and flinty, with a mix of green apple, lime, quince and spicy hazelnut notes that are pure and focused, gaining depth on the finish. Drink now through 2012. —James Laube, 93 points

Wine Advocate
The non-malolactic barrel-fermented, green/gold-colored 2007 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch offers loads of tropical fruit, pear, and honeysuckle characteristics in its full-bodied personality. The oak component has been downplayed over recent vintages, and the wine is all the better for it, displaying gorgeously pure fruit. It should drink nicely for 2-4 years. —Robert Parker, 92 points

Wine Enthusiast
Powerful in the white Burgundy manner, this 100% Chardonnay was aged in 85% new oak and is very ripe. It brims with pineapple tart, tangerine, lime, vanilla-infused crème brûlée and smoky wood flavors, with a firm minerality suggesting the tang of cold steel. Dryness and zesty acidity give it balance and elegance. Now?2010. —Steve Heimoff, 94 points
